If a child is injured or becomes ill during the school day, he/she is sent to the nurse. If it is determined that the student should be sent home, a parent or other designated adult will be called to take the student home. The student must be signed out in the main office. It is important that the school main office has current emergency phone numbers to contact the parent.

Here are some tips to help you decide if your child should be kept home from school:

- If your child has had a fever, the temperature should be normal for 24 hours before your child returns to school

- If the child vomits after his/her normal bedtime, he/she should stay home the next day

- Colds with constant coughing/fever are also reasons your child should be kept home

Medication Rules:

If a student must take medication during the school day, it is necessary to have a written doctor’s order with the name of medication and dosage information. There must also be a signed parental administration form. The medication must be brought to school in its original container by the parent or designated adult and left in the nurse’s office. Over the counter medications must follow the same policy. This policy is strictly enforced for the health and safety of all the children in the school.

Physical Exams:

Physicals are required in Kindergarten, Second and Fourth grades and also for students in any grade who are entering the Rome School District for the first time. Each year each child also has height, weight, blood pressure, vision and hearing checked by the school nurse. Parents will be mailed a written report of any abnormal findings.

It would be appreciated if a call is made to the school nurse if/when your child has a contagious condition such as; chicken pox, strep throat, impetigo, scabies and pink eye.
